The Status of Tablet Market

Apple’s apps processor is the market leader tablet processor, which is always applied for the iPad. According to statistics, the market share of its tablet processor had reached 61% in the first quarter of this year. Nvidia is the nearest rival to Apple’s A4 and A5 iPad processors.

Nvidia’s Tegra 2 processor is a dual-core Cortex-A9 processor and supports the Honeycomb Android OS used in the non-iPad tablets. The market share of Nvidia’s Tegra 2 processor was 34.4% in the first quarter of this year. Experts wish the Nvidia’s tablet apps processor share would increase to 48.6% in the second quarter of this year. Tegra 2 processors are used in tablets from vendors, such as the Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 8.9, Dell Streak 7, LG Optimus Pad 3D, Acer Iconia Tab 500 and Asus Eee Pad Transformer.

With its upcoming Kal-El quad-core processor, Nvidia’s share is expected to increase. Nvidia is also also successful in the smartphone processor market.

There are other suppliers in the tablet market, such as Qualcomm, TI, Samsung and Intel. The market share of x86 processors was less than 5% in the first quarter of 2011. Intel is going to support Android tablets from later this year, which may help the share of x86 processors to increase. The blockbuster product will become the key for future development of the tablet market. Some fortunes of suppliers are tied with this. Finally, Amazon’s rumoured tablet and Microsoft’s Windows 8 platform is expected to drive the further tablet apps processor vendor dynamics.
