It is well known that the designers always need very uniform color temperature when they are designing with white LEDs. Every LED should be nearly identical in color and intensity. In order to meet their demand, Vishay Intertechnology, Inc has expanded the color binning and ordering options for its VLMW41xx series of sapphire-based, cool white SMD LEDs in the PLCC-2 package. According to CIE1931, the devices are now available in 14 different color bins with very narrow chromaticity coordinate groups. What is more, the LEDs comprised of four adjacent color bins also can be ordered by the customers.
By providing more narrow color bins, the product allows customers to order four adjacent color groups. The color differences can be eliminated by Vishay’s VLMW41xx series. The related
applications includes automotive dashboards and switches; indicators and backlighting in telecommunications systems, audio and video equipment, white goods, and office equipment; and flat backlighting for LCDs, switches, and symbols in general use.
The devices are built on a highly efficient InGaN technology; therefore, it is able to provide a ±60° angle of half-intensity, an extremely high luminous intensity ranging from 180 mcd to 450 mcd, and a typical color temperature of 5500 K, cool white. For automotive applications, the VLMW41xx devices are e qualified with AEC-Q101.
EIA- and ICE-standard PLCC-2 are the package of the VLMW41xx series. The package is composed of a lead frame embedded in a white thermoplast. The reflector inside the package is filled with a mixture of epoxy and TAG phosphor. The TAG phosphor converts the blue emission partially to yellow, which mixes with the remaining blue to produce white. In accordance with JESD22-A114-B, an ESD-withstand voltage up to 2 kV is the feature of LEDs. The LEDs are lead (Pb)-free and RoHS compliant. The quality of the samples is OK. The larger production will be taken six to eight weeks later.
