The e2v imaging sensors will be integrated into a focal plane array for the NigeriaSat-2 satellite. Image sensor is developed by e2v in the UK, which has been launched into space on an Earth observation satellite. It will be used for Nigeria’s National Space Research and Development Agency. This project is taken by Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL).
The NigeriaSat-2 satellite will have its own functions in this project, such as mapping the country and helping in water resource management and disaster mitigation. People in this project all have strong confidence that NigeriaSat-2 will be a great success, accelerating the discovery of indispensable information in Nigeria. The e2v high-resolution focal plane for the instrument was built with an array of five charge-coupled device (CCD) CCD31-40 imaging sensors.
The novel packaging technique is the characteristic of this focal plan design. The five devices are placed in very close parallel with each other and co-planar to less than 10µm in the focal plane design. The CCD sensor is an 8192 x 1 pixel device with 12µm square pixels. It also has the readout via two registers, one above and one below the image region. The registers are split in the middle and terminated in four separate output amplifiers.
It also has five multispectral bands which have the range of 450nm to 900nm. In order to give the required information, the appropriate filters are placed over some of the CCDs. The excellent performance factors are offered by the CCDs.
