The solar cell with 20.2% efficiency has broken the record, which is developed by German solar module maker Schott. This product is compatible with mass production. The solar development at Schott has declared that they have not applied any fancy stuff from the lab. They screen printed a silver grid on the front and aluminium on the back side. With this method, only 18-18.5% of the efficiency can be achieved.
There are two reasons make the efficiency possible. Firstly, Developed with the Schmid Group in Germany, one has been dubbed selective emitter’ and involves altering junction characteristics across the cell by locally varying phosphorus doping. Doping is high under where the silver electrode lines will later be deposited, and lower in the open areas of the cell. Secondly, it applies the PERC. PERC is short for passivated rear side contact. This technology was developed by Schott last year.
On the rear side, a stack of dielectric layers is included. The stack can be opened, and the aluminium is put on top. The metal contacts only form locally, and the passivation prevents so many electrons from disappearing on the rear surface. Then, the solar cell with 20.2% efficiency has been developed, which is the world’s first 156x156mm solar cell.
All the cells are suitable for mass production, although they have not made on a production. The company is able to make the cell have 4.92W of power, which will inspire all the stuff to work on optimizing the actual manufacturing process. And these results will soon be applied to the highly efficient modules. A mono-crystalline wafer is used by this cell. This cell is driven by a multi-crystalline cell which was developed lasted year. Its module efficiency of 17.6% also gained the world record.
The German solar module maker Schott spares no efforts to develop the mono-crystalline cells in early 2011. Its experience on the multi-crystalline solar cells also can be used in this study. We believe that the mono-crystalline technology will serve for the actual product soon.
