One day after Apple announced record financial results, it released a 27-inch display for the Thunderbolt interconnect which is an updated versions of its MacBook Air notebook and Mac mini desktop with Thunderbolt and an upgrade of its Mac OS operating system.
The Apple Thunderbolt Display is the first display and one of the first major peripherals to ship, which uses Thunderbolt, a dual 10 Gbit/s bi-directional link. Developed by Intel, it was first used in February on an Apple MacBook Pro. Hedging its bets on Thunderbolt, this new display also supports Gigabit Ethernet and FireWire 800. It has three USB 2.0 ports.
At present, only small amount of other companies including Canon, La Cie, Promise and Western Digital have said they will produce external storage devices and cameras using the link. No other major OEMs have announced agendas to adopt the technology.
The PCI Special Interest Group said in June that they have plans for a cabled version of PCI Express 3.0 for similar applications as Thunderbolt.
The display also covers an integrated charger, an embedded Apple FaceTime camera and a 2.1 audio speaker system and will be available in 60 days and price at retail $999.
Thunderbolt port was also put on new 11- and 13-inch models of its MacBook Air notebook. The systems have two USB 2.0 ports, and use a range of Intel Core i5 and i7 processors and priced ar $999 to $1,599. The specific price depends on configuration.
The company also set a Thunderbolt port on two new Mac mini models with Intel Core i5 processors and the prices are $599 and $799. The systems sport four USB 2.0 ports, an HDMI port and a FireWire 800 port as well.
What’s more, Apple released Lion, the eighth version of its Mac OS, which can be downloaded at the price of $29.99 on its Mac App Store. Lion sports 250 new features covering new multi-touch gestures, integrated access to the Mac App Store and integrated peer-to-peer wireless networking.
However, some said that it is good that the Thunderbold port is made available on the Apple products but for which purpose people will use this port as there are hardly some devices there in the segment with the said port. People may want to know more about the benefits when it is used as display. The related integrated circuit is TLP281_4.
