Gartner, an international research and consultancy firm, said that in 2011, global semiconductor revenue is expected to reach 3,150 billion U.S. dollars which grows 5.1% as compared with 299 billion U.S. dollars in 2010. Gartner originally predicted the Q1 of this year’s revenue of the semiconductor industry annual growth rate is up to 6.2%.
Japan’s earthquake and tsunami leads to the concerns of silicon wafers, battery, quartz crystal oscillator, packaging and other special order parts supply. However, the damage of electronics industry supply by Japan’s catastrophe is limited.
Peter Middleton, a principal analyst at Gartner, said, “Japan’s natural disasters did impact the semiconductor market and the supply chain, but at least the earthquake was not as serious as expected in March. At the later half of the month, manufacturers strove to avoid supply shortage caused by uncertainty for natural disasters, and feared that would lead to orders repetition extended to the second quarter. We believe that manufacturers are very conservative to the market conditions and production in the second quarter. The majority of manufacturers are expected to exceed the original estimate.”
Middleton further stated, "Although the impact is not as serious as originally expected, the third quarter of 2011 is still expected to have some residual effect, for the supply chain order has not been restored. It may affect some part of production and produce some unexpected situation. But once the situation of the third quarter was in certainty, supply chain vendors will be confident that all issues will be resolved and production will soon return to normal. It is expected that at the end of 2011 and early 2012, the inventory problem caused by weak growth of semiconductor market will slow down."
Gartner predicts that in 2011, the revenue of global application specific standard products (ASSP) will reach $ 79.7 billion, and in 2015 will grow to $ 99.4 billion. By the benefit of the Apple application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) investment and selling mobile device handle (commanding grip), the application-specific standard product market will continue to grow until 2015. During this period, by the driven of the application of auto electronics, non-optical sensors will push up the overall market to the highest point, but high growth is mainly by the increases outside sensor used in automotive applications, especially smart phones, tablet devices and game consoles. The related integrated circuit is N1705.
