The topical dimming matrix LED backlight is the integrated technology of side entering type and vertical type. This new technique has combined the advantages of these two types.
When the LED television was emerged in the early time, the largest shortcoming of the side entering type was unable to adjust the light in part. The LED lights concentrate on the edge of television, so the light guide plate should output the light to TV image evenly. When it comes to the vertical type, the LED switch can be controlled by the LED driving chip, so it has the topical dimming function. Compared with the vertical type, the matrix LED has more controllable partition. Thickness is the fatality of vertical type. Although using the LED+lenslet has greatly reduced the thickness, it is still thicker than the side entering type. We can say that the matrix backlight has perfectly solved this problem.
Contract ratio is the weakness of the LCD, which is also the important point for the quality of image. The contract ratio of vertical type can be improved greatly when it is having the white-black image. In the black part of the image, reducing or closing the LED current can save the power consumption, which is also the advantage of vertical type. The matrix LED backlight has the same strong point. The matrix scatters a lot of LED in the backlight; therefore, the heat dissipation design will become very simple.
The new LED backlight has the above advantages, it must be a new direction of the LED design, but its weakness is very obviously. Firstly, it requires the partitioning backlight to have the accurate control. Generally speaking, the circuit design will be more complicated. Moreover, the selection of the LED chip will make the cost higher. Secondly, the yield rate and cost are the elements to limit this technology.
