Sony’s PlayStation Network has been down since April 20th, and there’s still no certainty about when it will be back. The reasons for this is complicated and confusing.
On the first day of the outage, Sony company has given a short update and announced the breakdown of certain functions of PlayStation Network. On the following days, the company was still investigating the cause of this accident and it reminded users that the complete recovery might take a long time. In the past years, Sony had some trouble with PSN. In March last year, some players were knocked offline for a couple of days by an internal timing bug. Last month, some PSN severs were slowed down by distributed denial of service attacks, this event was supposed to be a revenge by a hacker group Anonymous in response to Sony’s lawsuit against hacker George Geohot Holtz.
Error codes will pop up as users signing into the PSN or it’s relevant websites such Netflix. For those who use their PS3s mostly for playing online games, they will stuck waiting if they ignore the popup. Otherwise, with high-end laptops and HDMI cables, problems solved.
Sony claims that it have shut down 70 million subscriber service preemptively. Sony company believes that its PlayStation Network was attacked by external forces. Actions were taken by the company such as turning off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services in time, conducting thorough investigation, verifying network services move forward smoothly and safely, and doing all they can to solve the problem as soon as possible.
Despite the reference of external forces mentioned on the official PlayStation blog, the real cause remaining unclear. Was it done by the Anonymous? Or it was just a result of targeted behavior by an outside party? On the PlayStation EU blog, Anonymous posted that it could be done by other Anons and even pointed out that the whole outage is an internal problem with the severs and Sony just takes advantage of Anonymous’ previous ill-will towards the company to distract users from this fact.
The problem is still hanging there, Sony said that the full investigation was moving on orderly and normally, and no officials were involved. The related integrated circuit is MA784.
