The emergence of electronic transformer is regarded as a revolution in the manufacturing industry of high voltage electrical apparatus. Its digital output and networking connection make the device safer and more environmental protective, which are also benefit for the intelligent of the entire electrical power transmission and distribution system. There are many characteristics of this technology: firstly, the small size replaces the original large size; secondly, the digital transmission replaced the simulation output, which is easy to process the connection and intelligent of the follow-up network; thirdly, transmitting the signal by optical fiber cable is anti-interference; fourthly, the industrial Ethernet is used by the electronic transformer to measure and share, thus a large number of electric cables can be saved.
The electronic transformer has changed the original way of assemble application, for instance, the microelectronic devices are removed outside, nearing the high tension wires and circuit breaker. The device must be disturbed by the bad weather and irregular electromagnetism. There are so many challenges in the application of this new technology, such as the interference protection, error control of communication and the reliable power source. In order to solve the above problems, we should perfect the related standards and promote the research of electronic transformer to the direction of high reliability and stability.
There are some research directions of the new technology in the future, I will list below: first is the passivity of sensor. The single ECT will develop towards the passivity, such as getting out of the dependence of power source, supplying the power by itself. Thus the service life of the device can reach more than ten years. Secondly, the electronic transformer can combine with many different devices like transformer, isolating switch, because of t he low power and small size. These different combinations are able to save cost and space. These devices also can be complementary with each other. The third direction is standardization. The electronic transformer made by different factories can be exchanged easily with some standards. The related integrated circuit is WE9187.
