Smart grid is an intelligent grid system which is based on integrated and high speed bidirectional communication network. Depending on advanced sensing and testing technology, it makes the grid system safer, more reliable and more effective.
Smart grid system will make daily life easier for people. With a smart grid system, you just need to give order by putting the button in your computer in office instead of going back home in a hurry after work for cook. Rice cooker, conditioner, washing-machine can all be made to start working as soon as you put the button down. Feel it is not real, right? Yes, it is really so miraculous but it is just what smart grid will give us in the future. Besides, you can also generate electricity through collecting solar energy and transfer the electricity into grid for which you will be paid for. Moreover, it has self-test ability which keeps the voltage steady all the time even when there is a short interruption.
It saves the electrical energy and also helps to extend the lifespan of household appliances. To a large-sized factory, there are many types of equipment which all must be driven by the electric motors. It demands electric motors to output a bigger starting current than working current, which will propose a higher demand to load capacity of power supply system and will lead to great investment in power supply equipment. Smart grid makes it possible for people to startup equipments in different period of time which reduce the waste of energy as well as the investment in extra electric motors to guarantee enough starting current. Furthermore, smart grid has flexible electric power transmission system. The energy consumption and wire damage are caused by surge, harmonics and electromagnetic pulse in the process of electric power transmission. And flexible electric power transmission system can avoid these problems effectively.
Smart grid is still a brand-new concept to people around the world. International Business Machines company proposed the idea of smart grid early in 2006 in order to find a solution to improve the safety and reliability of power supply system. After taking office, the president of America began to upgrade the existing electric network which wasted a lot of energy every year and he built a network to manage existing electric of four different time zones together and also made great effort to manage solar energy, geothermal energy and wind energy within the same online system. Therefore, smart grid is on its way for meeting the need of cutting energy waste world widely.
