In almost integrated circuits, diodes are the dispensable part. It can make the current flow in the expected direction. In electronics, a diode is a two terminal device which conducts the current in only one direction. It has two terminals: a plate and a cathode.
The most common function of a diode is to let the current flow in one direction. If the current goes through in the opposite direction, it will be blocked and there is a big voltage over the device. Based on this theory, the diode is often used as a current limiter.
The applications of the diodes are as follows. First is its radio demodulation use. It can be for the amplitude modulated radio broadcasts. The diode rectifies the amplitude modulated radio frequency signal. Second is its over voltage protection function. The diode is able to prevent the large voltage from going through the electronic component. When the voltage is above the normal range, the diodes become forward biased. Thus, the electronic component will be survived from being damaged.
When using a diode, it must be put in a correct direction, or the correct way round. Diodes are labelled with a small print on the top of the negative pole, making it easily to recognize. You must see clearly, or the diode will be damaged when the current is flowing through.
With the development of times, diodes are gradually go out of the electronical world, but it is also the necessary part in the integrated circuits, and chips are made without them. A good example of such a chip is:AP0820 .
