Power Integrations is the professional supplier of high-voltage analog integrated circuits for energy-efficient power conversion. With the new technologies of this company, the compact, energy-efficient power supplies can be used for many electronic applications, such as LED lighting, cell phone chargers, computers, LCD TVs, DVD players, set-top boxes, home appliances, telecom networking equipment, and many others.
Since 1998, billions of dollars in standby energy waste has been saved by Power Integrations’ patented EcoSmart technology. The EcoSmart technology also prevented millions of tons of CO2 emissions. This firm is also one of the members of clean-technology stock indices sponsored by Cleantech Group LLC and Clean Edge. More than 400 U.S. patents and 200 non-U.S. patents are owned by this company.
A reference design of Power Integrations is design for an 85%-efficient, 15W PAR38 downlight driver. This design can deliver flicker-free dimming without the electrolytic bulk capacitors. The reference design is used to offer flicker-free performance across a broad range of traic dimmers, which is based around the firm’s LNK405EG LED driver IC.
The incandescent lights always apply an order of magnitude more power than LED lights of equivalent lumen output. The typical TRIAC dimmers are designer for them. When the low current requirement of LED lights, especially in the dimmed environment, the annoying flickering effect can be caused. Storing energy in an electrolytic bulk capacitor with bulb lifetime implications can solve this problem, or allowing a continuous flow of current into the bulb, wasting energy and thereby defeating the main benefit of LED lighting are also available. All in all, an alternative approach without the need for electrolytic bulk capacitors is brought by the DER-281 reference design.
