Intel corp., the biggest chip manufacturer in the world, claimed that a greatest breakthrough has been achieved in fifty years regarding to microprocessor. It is the first three-dimensional structure transistors in the world. Intel said in the report that Ivy Bridge 22nm microprocessor is in the agenda of bulk production in this year.
Transistors are the basic component of electronic system. Intel’s latest technology turned circuit from two dimensions to three dimensions. Intel said that it is very like to expand space above the city by using of high buildings. Three-dimensional transistor has an extra vertical structure as compared to two-dimensional transistor, and it makes the package of transistor in chip more tight.
The statistics provided by Intel indicate that the performance of three-dimensional transistor improves 37 percent as compared with adopting two-dimensional transistor with regarding to 32nm chip. However, its power consumption only is half decrease. And as for cost, it is only 2-3% higher than traditional two-dimensional transistor.
The day when Intel claimed the news, its supplier for manufacture deceives, application material corp., declaimed that they plan to purchase Varian Semiconductor Equipment with 4.9 billion dollars, so that to be able to handle the more complex chip than 22nm one and catch up with the technology of Intel’s three-dimensional transistor which took ten years of developing.
Intel plans to focus its new products on panel computer and smart phone area. People suppose that this may be a threat for Britain microprocessor giant, ARM. ARM used to be in the leading position of smart phone and panel PC. On the impact of the news of new technology released, the share price of ARM reduced by 7.3% on May 4, while Intels’ jumped by 2% that day.
However, an advanced analyst in iSuppli Gu said that Intel’s new product is a breakthrough but not revolutionary. It just has the advantage of low energy consumption and more advanced process procedure.
A Taiwan chip manufacturer, TSMC, announced that they will not adopt three-dimension technology until the capacity of two dimension hits the limit. For them, this kind of technology is not mature enough.
One of Matrix’s analysts said that it’s evident that Intel wants to fight more markets except PC. The key problem is that if they are able to release a microprocessor which is advanced enough to dominate in the area of mobile computer.
The analyst of Citi Bank, Glen Yeung, was very optimistic about Intel’s new technology. He believes that Intel will have absolute advantages in 3-4 years in the field of chip manufacture. The related integrated circuit is MC3301.
