The development of technology is becoming very fast, and all of us are in the information age. As the most basic and important technology to gain the information, sensor has developed so much. It is developing towards the integration, miniaturization and networking, which will brings an information revolution. When the micro-processor becomes smaller and the price becomes lower, many wireless sensor networks begin to put to use. Currently, the applications of the networks are in the below areas.

First is the environmental monitoring and protection. More and more people concern about the environmental problem nowadays. And many environmental data need to be collected. The wireless sensor network makes the data acquirement easy; meanwhile, it also avoids the devastation brought by the traditional ways. For example, the researchers of Intel research laboratory used thirty two small sensor networks to find the climate of an island. This network also can be used to study the influence caused by the migratory birds on the crops, thus the compositions of sea, air and soil can be monitored.

Second is the medical care. The scientists in university of Rochester had established a smart sickroom by the wireless sensor network. Using the dust can test patients’ important signs, such as the blood pressure, pulse and respiration. The activities of the whole day also can be observed. Intel also has released a family health care technology of the wireless sensor network. This technology is developed as a chain of the Center for Aging Services Technology. The semiconductor sensors are embedded in the furniture and devices to help the daily life of aged people and disabled people. The wireless communication can transmit the information with high-speed, so the care is easier. Moreover, the patients’ burden can be reduced with this technology.

Third is in the military field. The characteristics of this technology make it very suitable for the dreadful battlefield conditions, such as making a reconnaissance of enemy’s situation, monitoring the military strength and equipment, judging the bio-chemical attack and so on.
