According to the latest research of IHS iSuppli, 2011 will witness the boom of GEM. It occupies the share of 50 percent in laptop market and so does in desktop market.
In the field of laptop, the production volume of GEM computer is equal to non-GEM adopted computers for the first time. While in 2010, the market share of non-GEM adopted computer was 21 percent ahead. In the field of desktop, 2011 GEM computer will be leading by 10 percent compared to the last year. By 2012, it can be predicted that there will be 70 percent GEM laptops and 60 percent desktops over the global production volumes.
GEM adopts single-chip design with CPU and GPU contained. It can make CPU be more capable of graphic and video processing. The more significant function of GEM is that it can produce intact graphic output without other GPU and additional graphics needed.
Due to more multimedia experience needed by computers, it is very important to boost graphic processing ability for computer to enhance the position of GEM.
The research of IHS iSuppli shows that as two leading enterprises in the field of PC microprocessor, Intel and AMD will be in sharp competition in GEM market in 2011. At the beginning of 2011, Intel plans to launch the second Duo processor named “Sandy Bridge” which integrates CPU and GEM on a single chip. ADM intends to use five GEM microprocessors to launch five application platforms.
Another competitor is VIA which provides GEM solutions with regard to embodied and industry application to serve more related markets.
IHS believes that GEM’s performance will not be able to as good as graphics card. Graphics card will still be the primary option for solutions of advanced graphics application. By contrast, GEM will meet the need of mass PC market without advanced graphic processing ability needed.
As a result, IHS holds that GEM may control much more graphics market but in short or middle period, the influence will not be prominent. The related integrated circuit is 45-21.
