The shipment of world’s storage products will increase by ten percent in 2010, because the demand from corporations is robust. The shipment of HDD and SSD will increase to 547.2 million in 2011, which increases 10.9% than last year. With the recovery of economy, the demand of storage products is increasing; therefore, HDD and SSD are benefited. HDD will keep the leading status, which will have 532.7 million of shipment. The shipment of SSD will increase by 111.6% in this year, which will reach 14.6million. The third area is ODD which is comparatively small. Its shipment has healthy growth, but its sales are less than the previous two main area. The price reduction of blue
laser and DVD drive is the main reason.
The laptop computer of MacBook Air applied SSD in last year, which is the turning point of the entire industry. The low-end device sells 999 US dollars; therefore, the other personal computer manufacturers also make their price low. When the average price become normal, the expensive SSD will be feasible for customers. The products developed by the competitor are similar with MacBook Air, the shipment of SSD will increase steadily.
Driven by many elements, such as the update of server, virtualization and the establishment of cloud computing infrastructure, the demand of HDD keep increase in 2011. Although the capacity of tablet computer is increasing, the ratio takes by HDD in portable computer is not reducing, especially the 2.5’’ HDD. The desktop computer will become unimportant from this year; therefore, the size of HDD will increase from 2.5’’ to 3.5’’.The HDD suppliers still use the infrastructures and supply chain to capture the market share from Seagate. Although Seagate is in the leading status, it will lose more market share if it does not have the disruptive technology. The related integrated circuit is LLDB4.
