What Is SOP?

SOP is a kind of electronic term, it is short for small outline package and is a retangular surface-mount assembly. It is much smaller and thinner than the DIP, besides, it has as the same pinouts as the DIP ICs. It uses gull wing formed leads. Kinds that are commonly seen are usually 14-pin and 18-pin and so on.

For example, the typical kind of SOP package is theTLP176A . It consists of gallium arsenide infrared emitting diode optically coupled to a photo-MOS FET in a SOP, which is suitable for surface mount assembly. It is available in a 4-pin SOP package and it can be used in the replacement of mechanical relays which requires space saving.

Besides, there is anther kind of package which is much smaller and with fewer pins, that is PSOP. Today, many chips are made in that way and they are used in many applications such as medical and military use.
