Nowadays, USB and flash memory cards are very common in the consumer and industrial worlds. USB has a high speed of transmission with up to 480 Mbps. Many operating systems provide native support for this technology with hundreds of millions of devices.
However, USB is not only used for transferring data between devices, but also provides a way for charging portable devices. As people expand their digital lifestyle to have their content always available, more and more devices take advantage of the economies of scale afforded by the explosion of interconnections that ensue.
Vehicles are becoming warehouses of content and information including large storage capacity for entertainment content and navigation information. One of the most popular formats for memory is Secure Digital (SD). It is widely adopted in embedded applications to attach devices like WiFi (or WLAN), Bluetooth transceivers, and GPS receivers with an SDIO interface to substitute for hard disks, CD and DVD media.
Therefore, USB and Flash media interfaces have wide application in automotive industry. SMSC recently released the TrueAuto Quality USB82640 and USB82660 USB hub and card reader combination products which can meet the harsh requirements of the automotive environment.
The quality requirements of automotive are extremely high. With regarding to automotive quality requirements, devices aimed to the automotive market have to be designed, validated, characterized, qualified, fabricated and supported specifically for automotive applications. Because cars have really long lifecycles, any flaws in this area are very serious in terms of maintenance time and customer service.
TrueAuto is a well-know automotive quality process for SMSC. When integrated circuits firstly made for utilizations, they have to be qualified according to the AEC-Q100, while minimum common requirements for the qualification of an automotive IC are covered. What’s more, AEC-Q100 mainly focuses on the qualification phase of the product cycle of an IC. Other phases like the design and production, customer support and the handling and investigation of returns are not included in detail. In order to achieve zero defect rates, all phases of the IC product cycle need to be addressed all round.
As far as memory for storage is concerned, portable memory cards are adopted to transfer data from computers, portable media players or cameras into the car. Gigabytes of microcode are incorporated by car makers into some of most delicate vehicles. Navigation systems’ map data also demands for storage. The related integrated circuit is IT150-S.
