For making isolated power supplies up to 10W, the MAX13256 H-bridge transformer driver offers a simple solution. The device drives a transformer’s primary coil with up to 300mA of current from a wide 8V to 36V DC supply. The transformer’s secondary-to-primary winding ratio defines the output voltage, which makes selection of virtually any isolated output voltage possible. With this device, the users are able to select their own transformer winding ratio which defines the output voltage; therefore, the selection of virtually any isolated output voltage can be done.
The protection features of the devices can prevent system-level failures. Adjustable current limiting allows indirect limiting of secondary-side load currents. an external resistor, which is over the 215mA to 650mA (typ) range, determines an overcurrent limit. When the device detects overtemperature or overcurrent condition, an active-low FAULT output asserts. This integrated thermal and short-circuit protection ensures safe operation and reduces both cost and PCB space over discrete solutions.
