A process, which can integrate environmental considerations into each stage of product initiation, design and life-cycle, is developed by Design house Cambridge Consultants. This process is called ’Ecovation methodology’, which can be demonstrated with a vacuum cleaner called Stem. The human factors and technical performance are taken into consideration by the ’Ecovation methodology’. The process can be used in different kinds of devices to reduce its overall environmental impact.
The system must be regarded as a whole, which has so many aspects from material extraction to manufacture, product use and finally disposal. While the same performance has been kept, stem would consume 43% less energy than the average vacuum cleaner. According to the survey, the power consumption becomes the largest factor in a vacuum’s eco-impact rating, so Stem automatically changes its power usage according to the job being done.
With this concept, the users get the appropriate power they need,so no power will be wasted. Moreover, it intelligently reduces the power usage when no cleaning is happening. When compared with the industry standard, the Stem reduces overall environmental impact over its entire lifecycle by 27%. The environment gains do not have any influences on the performance of the device, which is very important for the users. The size and weight of the device is same with the regular devices.
However, it is still a concept now. The formula will be used in practice in the future. Some people may ask that why use a vacuum cleaner to demonstrate the concept. It is a good example that combines the high power with high performance, which means a great step of the research. Finally, this concept can be used by any other devices.
