DAC161P997, a new 16-bit digital-to-analog converter features in a single-wire interface and 4-to-20 mA current loop drive that simplifies the design of smart transmitters used in industrial two-wire sensor systems, is released by National Semiconductor Corp. The low-power DAC161P997 provides system designers an exceptional balance of accuracy, ease of use, performance and system cost.
With the capability of enabling a single isolation component to cross the isolation boundary, this highly integrated device reduces component count and cost in factory and building automation control systems. The interfaces of DAC161P997 can directly to a microcontroller in sensing and detecting applications where galvanic isolation is not required.
The DAC161P997 can be used for transmitting an analog output current over an industry standard 4-20 mA current loop. Its delta-sigma DAC offers excellent long-term output current drift of 90 ppm and 16-bit accuracy with a minimal temperature coefficient of 29 ppm, while consuming less than 190 µA of supply current.
Since the data link to the DAC161P997 is a Single Wire Interface, so the sensor data can be transferred in digital format over an isolation boundary by using a single isolation component. The digital input of DAC161P997 is compatible with standard isolation transformers and optocouplers. Error detection and handshaking features within the SWIF protocol ensure error free communication across the isolation boundary. The DAC161P997 interfaces directly to a microcontroller for applications where isolation is not required.
The loop drive of the DAC161P997 interfaces to a HART modulator, allowing injection of FSK modulated digital data into the 4-20mA current loop. This combination of specifications and features makes the DAC161P997 ideal for 2- and 4-wire industrial transmitters.
The DAC161P997 is available in a 16-lead LLP package and is specified over the extended industrial temperature range of -40°C to 105°C.
The DAC161P997 complements National’s innovative Sensor AFE Family in smart transmitter designs, including a wide variety of gas, temperature and pressure sensor applications.
