It is said that ST Microelectronics NV (Geneva, Switzerland) has announced the SPV1040. It is a monolithic step-up converter with high efficiency and low power and voltage offering power supply to products which even adopts a photovoltaic cell or fuel cells. Their capability of handling low input is extremely important.
The working voltage rang of ST’s SPV1040 is 0.3 V to 5.5 V input. It can achieve maximum efficiency under several various conditions in a day, such as irradiation, dirt and temperature. Due to the embedded MPPT algorithm, power is harvested from the cells and transferred to the output.
The SPV1040 uses an input voltage regulation loop to fix the charging battery voltage. And it is set with a resistor divider and a maximum output current set with a current sense resistor with regarding to charging current limitation.
The safety guaranteeing devices are also adopted for application. The converter itself stops the PWM switching when either if reached maximum input current peak threshold set up to 1.8 or maximum temperature limit set up to 155℃.
The features of SPV1040 are as followed: (1)Input-voltage range: 0.3V to 5.5V; (2)Integrated low-loss synchronous rectifier and power switch; (3)Up to 95% efficiency; (4)Shutdown pin to aid system-level power management; (5)Thermal shutdown and protection circuitry to improve battery and overall system safety.
The applications of SPV1040 can be listed as (1)Smart phones and GPS systems; (2)Wireless headsets; (3)Small appliances, sensors; (4)Portable media players; (5)Digital still cameras; (6)Toys and portable healthcare.
It is available in the TSSOP8 plastic package, and the SPV1040 is in full production. The price of the model is approximately $2.00 in quantities of 1000 units. Alternative pricing options are available for larger quantity orders. Evaluation boards and technical documentation are also available.
TS Microelectronics was built up in 1987 by the merger of two long-established semiconductor companies, SGS Microelectronic of Italy and Thomson Semiconductors of France, and has been publicly traded since 1994; its shares trade on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: STM), on Euronext Paris, and on Borsa Italiana.
The company provides an independent, secure and cost-effective manufacturing machine. ST operates a worldwide network of front-end (wafer fabrication) and back-end (assembly and test and packaging) plants. ST’s principal wafer fabs are presently located in Agrate Brianza and Catania (Italy), Crolles, Rousset and Tours (France), and in Singapore. The related integrated circuit is KDS193.
