The chain of LED industry can be divided into five parts. They are raw materials, upstream industries, midstream industries, downstream industries, and test/production equipment. Most of the raw materials are III-V compound semiconductor crystal like gallium arsenide single crystal substrate material and aluminum nitride single crystal. There are other available raw materials like high purity gallium metal and high purity metal organic sources such as trimethyl gallium, trimethyl smoke, trimethyl aluminum, high purity gases ammonia, nitrogen and hydrogen in existence. The upstream industries means epitaxial materials and chip manufacturing, and middlestream refer to a variety of LED accessories and packaging, while downstream mainly include LED application products industry. LED chip and device test equipment mainly are optical and electrical properties tester and spectrum analyzer. The main test parameters include the forward and reverse voltage, normal intensity, current characteristics, angular distribution of light intensity, peak wavelength, luminous flux, dominant wavelength, color cursor, color-rendering index and so on.
LED open signs are considered to be a good tool to promote company brand name and the information of products or services they offer. LED panels used for displaying the information are produced by the blinking diodes. This technology is widely used in the store signs, billboards, railway or bus stations, airports and long distance buses. LED open signs use a minimum of 2000 candelas per square meter and a maximum of 5000 candelas per square meter. The brightness is adjustable and can easily be reduced or increased from time to time as required. The locations of these LED panels depend on the factors such as line of sight, local authority requirement, power, ground suitability and obstructions such as overhead wires. These signs can be built by using the conventional LED panels with individual mounted discrete LEDs. A huge numbers of colored diodes are placed together and scattered evenly to provide the absolute pixel resolution. This technology is also applied to new generations of television and computers these days for providing HD quality pictures.
Another practical LED application is the LED wall washer, which comprises front housing, rear housing, light pole fixation base and clear cap. It also comprises the transformer fixed on the rear housing, the LED panel connected with the front housing and the internal surface of the foresaid front housing. In many cases, the wall washer light is designed to combine with an architectural feature for an impressive and eye-catching effect. Incandescent and fluorescent lights have typically been used in these applications since they can provide the necessary amounts of illumination capable of brightly lighting a large area. However, high intensity LEDs have recently become preferable to replace the incandescent or fluorescent lights because of LEDs adequate light output and lower power consumption.
