U.S. Firms in the Leading Position of Fabless

According to the market research firm IC Insights Inc., U.S. companies took nine of the top 10 places and 13 of the top 20 spots in a sales ranking of global fabless chip suppliers, which means that US firms occupy the leading position of fables in global market.

It is also said that the top 20 fabless IC suppliers accounted for 77% of the $59.9 billion in
fabless IC capacity last year, which slips two points from 2009 but up two points from 2008, said Scottsdale, Ariz from IC Insight.

IC Insights also added that thirteen fabless IC companies had exceeded $1 billion in IC sales in 2010. 2010 was the first year on record that entire fabless IC company sales did not surpass total IC market increase. According to IC Insights, fabless chip enterprise revenue increased by 27 percent in 2010 when it is compared to 31 percent for the whole semiconductor industry. Relatively poor performances by MediaTek Inc., Nvidia Corp., LSI Corp., Qualcomm Inc.,ST-Ericsson, Realtek Semiconductor Corp. and Himax Technologies Inc. were to blame, said IC Insights.

To sum up, these seven suppliers grew the 2010 IC sales by only 8 percent, which are dismal results compared to total IC market achievement of 31 percent.

On the other hand, IC Insights identified a range of seven fabless suppliers that generated the larger chip market in 2010, punctuated by Taiwanese consumer and communications chip firm MStar Inc., which had a sharp increase of 76 percent in 2010. These "magnificent seven" high-growth billion-dollar fabless companies, in total, registered a 47 percent growth in IC sales last year and occupied 45 percent of the total increase in fabless sales ($5.7 billion out of $12.6 billion), said IC Insights.
