Nowadays, many design service foundries are emerging in the area of IP development and exchange trade in China. In the face of vertical division of work for IC industry chain, many single-venture and joint-venture design foundries are rising with involved fields including IP development and exchange trade service, IC design and development service, project service of IC products application platform, IC embedded software service, IC OEM service, IC back-end service including related risk investment service for IC technology transfer, etc. According to their property, they can be classified as design service companies cooperated with chip foundries, IC foundries directly facing the market, IP one stop service companies specialized in specific areas and design service companies bonded with EDA tools and IP.
We should know that the whole industry has not yet been activated. The industry of IC design and service still has great potential and should be expected a tremendous booming.
During the period of Twelfth Five-year Program, with the development of foundry and design industry, China occupied a great share of global IC industry and its proportion is still increasing. The revenue of semiconductor will surge $23.9 billion which is 7.7% of the whole revenue. Currently, domestic design service foundry has been able to offer integrated front and back design solution from RTL to GDSII. If the design industry needs to achieve a new round great-leap-forward development, however, there is still a great challenge to face.
One hand, the cost of IC design and fabrication grows faster than IC market and most small fabless companies can not afford it. On the other hand, with chip design more complex and products updating speeding up, vast investment put on technology upgrade causes common design foundries hard to complete the whole design work.
Therefore, if IC design service needs to develop at an accelerated pace, it is highly time to focus attention on the service economy and government should create a good policy environment to support research and development on IC design. The related integrated circuit is MAXQ1850.
