In recent years, great revolutionary changes occurred in the lighting field by the emergence of LED lamps. In some Europe and the U.S. retail stores, we hardly find any old incandescent bulbs, and some places even prohibit sales. In lighting replacement market, CFL with low power is facing with new competitors when LED’s technology is constantly improving within its brightness and capacity. LED lamps now are becoming an ideal choice for its unique energy-efficient.
Generally, an incandescent bulb generates 10 lumens per watt, while one LED reaches 100 lumens per watt declared by manufacturer. The shape and maximum operating temperature, however, hinder the LED industry to bring out its full potential. So far, the efficiency of the most advanced LED replacement can generate 50-60 lumens per watt which can be leant that LED and CFL have been well-matched in term of efficiency standards (note: the efficiency of CFL is 50-60 lumens per watt with very limited improvement potential).
Ecological issues also increasingly gain attention from public. With more and more awareness of environment protection, the concept of resources saving and energy efficiency become the main point of marketing strategy. Over the past ten years, the tendency could be made out by lower fuel consumption and incandescent forbidden. Furthermore, many countries has established incandescent phase-out schedule and some lenient tax supports and financial assistance are offered by public policy especially for “eco” products with energy saving.
The inherent advantages of LED are very consistent with public safety, energy conservation and environmental protection, which fully satisfy people’s wish. More benefits can be listed as higher dimming capability, longer life, smaller form factor and low cost.
It is an industrial revolution taking place when compatible LED lighting solutions instead of traditional replacement lighting (fluorescent lamps, CFL energy saving lamps, halogen or other incandescent) applied in mechanism, optics, electronics and thermal field. As commercial, office and residential lighting market calls for improved quality of LED lamps, we should pay much attention to some technological issues including electrical compatibility, particularly in the use of the standard wall socket dimmer, shape of screw tape and LED heat dissipation.
