The term of software defined radio is raised by American military to solve the communication problems of troops from different countries. The traditional communication devices used by different armies are not compatible with each other, therefore, troops can not contact timely with each other. The so called alliance was not the really one, troops were just simply getting together. The flexibility and openness are the main characteristics of the software defined radio. The new functions can be easily added through adding the software modules. The software defined radio can contact with any station and be the radio frequency trunk for them. Costs can be cut by cancelling the useless software module. The standardized and modularized construction is applied in the software defined radio, therefore the hardware can be expanded, and the software can be updated in accordance of the newest technology. It is able to compatible with the stations of old system, thus the service of the old system station is also lengthened.

Apart from the military field, the software defined radio can also be applied in the other field, such as the radar and other applications. However, it also faces many technical challenges, such as the antenna technology and miniaturization technology.
